“To customize each wedding,” says the catering manager of The Mansion at Bretton Woods, “I ask about the cultures, religions, and lifestyles of each bride and groom. Then I try to create special themes with food and décor to personalize their special day.”

With decades of experience and having done thousands of weddings, the Bretton Woods team has a unique style that is both thorough and patient. “First and foremost, we must understand your dreams and expectations.”

Ask Your Venue

To choose your venue, the catering team of The Mansion at Bretton Woods suggests
asking questions in seven key areas.

1. The Size. What is the capacity of the available rooms? How many guests can be accommodated? How big is the dancefloor? How many musicians can be on the stage area?

2. The Menu. What are your menu options? How much does each option cost per person?

3. Other Events. How many events is the venue holding on your night?

4. Key Vendors. Are there any key vendors your venue prefers to deal with? Are they open to other vendors as well?

5. Hotel Rooms. Are there hotel accommodations for your guests?

6. Outdoor Options. Can you have an outside ceremony? Can you move your ceremony inside if the weather changes?

7. Deposits. How much does your venue want for their deposit, and when are they due?

Romance, Drama, Unique Personalized Weddings
“We can often set a theme. We might use photos of various weddings that have taken place in your families over the years. One couple had a Halloween wedding with skeletons and candles, and after dinner we handed out masks.” The bride wore a white one and everyone else wore black.

"One groom was a fireman, and we arranged for different fire engines in ice carvings. At another ceremony the couple’s dogs were ring bearers. Because Bretton Woods has such a wonderful open area, and holds one reception at a time, we can accommodate unique requests like that.”

In that particular case, the bride’s dog turned out to be the ring bearer in the wedding. “Our location provides these various options for the bride and groom, and these unusual scenarios create a special feeling for your wedding.”

Bretton Woods is a luxurious colonial style mansion, and the setting alone provides romance and drama. A Bretton Woods wedding can be as formal or informal, spontaneous or highly detailed, as you wish. In each case, the catering team has various suggestions.

“A formal wedding can be a black tie affair with French service featuring an upscale cocktail hour with a caviar and vodka station.”

The vodka stations can include canopies of frozen vodka and top-shelf liquor. “For a formal event you would have a sit down dinner on a Saturday night in formal attire.”

For a less formal affair, they recommend the ‘Bretton Woods Cocktail Reception.’ For the cocktail reception the rooms of the mansion are set up with different food stations, cocktails, and desserts.

"This allows guests to enjoy the music, food, gardens, deck, and ballroom as they please.”

For décor, many of their brides opt for romantic candles and fireplaces. “We can put candles in the fireplaces when it’s not winter. But in winter our four fireplaces offer a perfect setting for holiday celebrations and a winter wedding. Setting up your own photographs gives the space a very personal feel, and are often the best decorations.”

Bretton Woods offers many options for interfaith, intercultural weddings as well. Special menus and traditions are easily incorporated into your ceremony and reception.

“When two families from different backgrounds come together, it’s wonderful to create a wedding that celebrates the best of both families.”

A Historical Setting
Bretton Woods was built in 1894 by Oscar Coles Ferris and his wife Louise, the granddaughter of Jacob Ford. Their efforts helped to create the first bank in Morris County as well as many other businesses.

The Ferris house was renamed in honor of the United Nations Monetary Financial Conference in 1944, known as the Bretton Woods Conference, where gold became the world’s monetary standard.

“This was built on a dream. The owner, Earl Freeman, envisioned it as a signature wedding experience.

“To all of us, even after so many weddings, each one is still special and exciting.”
