“The key to personalizing your event can be found in two words — details and daring.” says Xochitl (pronounced Sasheel) Gonzalez, co-founder with Mayra Castillo of Always a Bridesmaid, a wedding planning service whose principals act as your most knowledgeable and efficient bridal assistants. “Always your loyal and efficient bridesmaids, assisting you around the clock.”

Sometimes they see couples who have a great idea, but who are afraid it might seem unusual for a wedding. “We encourage them to move forward,” says Xochitl, “and together we think of a way to adapt their idea or turn it into something exciting for their wedding.

“One couple who came to us met in college and wanted to acknowledge their alma mater. The bride chose one of their school colors, chocolate brown, and used it for her bridesmaids’ dresses. It looked gorgeous. For their favors they gave out keychains with their school’s crest on them.”

Xochitl and Mayra ask about the activities you do together, like running, hosting parties, or going to concerts, as well as your favorite foods, memories of each other, songs, and books. “With these lists,” says Xochitl, “we often find unique wedding themes behind your ordinary, day-to-day activities.”

Once you’ve begun the planning process, think about different aspects you want to incorporate into your wedding, and don’t hesitate to make suggestions to your vendors. If you have a favorite dish, talk with your caterer to see if it can be included as an appetizer or side dish.

“One groom’s favorite food was macaroni and cheese,” says Xochitl. “His mother and grandmother made it for the family on a regular basis. The caterer transformed an everyday food into an adorable appetizer that was a real crowd pleaser.”

Your reception isn’t the only place to add a personal touch. Your ceremony also can be personalized. “Almost every ethnicity and culture has special wedding traditions,” says Xochitl. “Incorporate one or more to infuse your culture into the most special part of your day. If you have a close relative or friend who is musical, invite them to sing a song at your ceremony.”

To avoid any scheduling problems on your wedding day, Xochitl suggests having someone to help keep everyone on schedule. “A wedding consultant or day-of coordinator will keep your day moving as planned. If you won’t have a professional around, create a timeline of your own. Include all your reception activities and an approximate time for each. Before the big day, time the drive from the ceremony to the reception and all other travel. At your trial hair and makeup appointment, time how long it takes to get everyone’s hair and makeup done.”

To stay comfortable from head to toe on your wedding day, Xochitl says, “wear your bridal shoes for a few hours to break them in, and sit in your foundation garments to make sure nothing is poking or prodding you where it shouldn’t.”

Always a Bridesmaid was founded by Xochitl and Mayra after the two professional event planners were constantly questioned by friends for wedding planning help. They designed their business for the budgets and schedules of working couples, and include affordable packages, e-consulting, and wedding planning workshops.

“We get to know each bride and groom,” says Xochitl. “We pride ourselves on finding spectacular venues, adding personalized details, and creating an event you and your guests won’t forget.”
