Crossword Puzzle Romance

"I met Greg at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Stamford, Connecticut, the annual tournament, run by Will Shortz, The New York Times crossword editor. It was the last place on earth I would have expected to meet my husband! But there he was, seated a few tables away.

"Solving crossword puzzles isn’t the sexiest of hobbies, but in our first few minutes, we had an immediate attraction. We dated for 10 months (with two copies of The New York Times each day), during which time Greg, a composer and pianist, composed both music and personalized crossword puzzles for me to celebrate major occasions.

"We got engaged in January of 2006. Greg created a puzzle scavenger hunt in our apartment that led to a final crossword puzzle he had constructed. Spelled out in its four corners were the words WILL, YOU, MARRY, and ME. And in the middle was a space for the answer: Yes.

"We instantly fell in love with Loft Eleven’s beautiful, airy loft space. Vicki Perryman helped us plan our wedding in just four months. On our wedding day Greg wrote the processional and recessional music for our ceremony. The service was beautiful and particularly poignant, because we asked Greg’s father, a retired judge, to co-officiate with our cantor.

"Greg and I had so much fun at the reception and the food was delicious. Our florist did a wonderful job bringing the room to life with deep red, velvety centerpieces on each table. Our appetizer was a seasonal baby green salad with candied walnuts, dried cranberries, and vinegarette with crumbled goat cheese.

"For the main course we had herb-crusted rack of lamb with garlic and mint pesto, sea bass with veronique sauce, a seasonal vegetable bundle, and roasted potatoes. Our dessert was a mouth-watering butter cream cake with white icing and raspberries.

"Vicki went above and beyond the call of duty. When I called the next day to report a missing gift, a copy of the first crossword book ever printed in America, they searched and turned it up.

"They were so accommodating to our requests and, despite the fact that it was their umpteenth wedding, it never compromised their ability to make ours feel like it was their most important one. They were fantastic to work with, provided utterly seamless service, and were accommodating to our tastes.

"The best part of our wedding was how much fun we had and how lucky we felt to have everyone celebrating with us. It was everything we could have hoped for, and I’ll always remember it with great happiness."
